Solar Watches – No More Batteries

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Using natural sources of light to power electronics is becoming more and more popular every day. Most watch batteries last about a year or so and then need to be replaced. Finding the right battery and installing it can be quite a hassle… enter the solar powered watch.

Companies started experimenting with solar powered watches in the 1980s, but now they are a major part of most watch companies. Solar watches work by using a solar panel behind the crystal of the watch to absorb sunlight and some artificial light. The watch is then able to store the energy so it can be powered when not exposed to a light source.

In the long run a solar powered watch will save you lots of time and money. Buying a watch is a long-term investment and most people collect quite a few watches over the years. If you even add just one solar powered watch to your arsenal, you at least always have one watch where the batteries don’t need to be replaced.

Is It Time For A New Watch?

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

For many of us, our wristwatch might feel quite like an old friend. It’s been with us over the years, has seen many miles of travel, and feels almost like a part of us. But unlike an old friend, sometimes it’s time to move on and upgrade to a newer model!

If you haven’t been in the market for a watch for a while, you might be in for quite a shock. Today’s watches are smarter, stronger, and more accurate. And some are even greener.
For instance, several wristwatches don’t even require batteries or winding anymore. Instead, they recharge themselves by using the natural motion of your arm throughout the day. Imagine never having to wind your watch again!

Advances in luminous coatings have led to watches that can read in near-darkness to total-darkness, even without a battery-draining light in the housing of the watch. And on the extremely sci-fi end of the scale, some watches will even “correct” themselves by syncing with an atomic clock throughout the day.

So if it’s been a while since you bought a new watch, you may just want to see what’s new in the world of watches. You’ll be pleasantly surprised!
