Monday, August 31st, 2009

Watches are an integral part of our life. Without watches, whether be wrist watches, digital or analogue watches or sports watches, we can not imagine a disciplined and punctual life. Watches, as said are a necessity of the man, were invented thousands of years back. And it took centuries to develop the watches what we see today. Ancient watches were in forms of sun-dials and water clocks. With the passage of time, hoping to reduce dependability on the unpredicted nature, people began working on more accurate machines for timekeeping.

After centuries and ceaseless transformations, the preliminary forms of modern watches appeared in the early 16th century. These watches were invented in Tudor, England. Soon the new form, though heavy and large, earned wide acclaim. These timekeeping devices were generally used as a necklace or pocket watches.

Later in seventeenth century, the pocket watches are commonly put on, while efforts were underway to enhance their accuracy and so on. The following watches were more accurate and efficient. A person named John Harrison was awarded for his valuable contribution in horology. The expert had worked endlessly to come up with an accurate watch that could help naval personnel in evaluating exact longitudinal locations of the ships.

In eighteenth century, innovation in clocks or watches continued. However, for the wrist watches, people had to wait for another century – 19th century. A man called Patik Phillipoe came up with first wrist watch. As expected, wrist watches soon became fashion. Early on the fashion of wrist watches were mainly confined to women only. However, soon men started accepting the trend and kicked off another era in the history of watches.

Just after modern watches took birth, people came up with wrist watches that had additional features such as alarm and so on. Rolex, known as number one watch brand presently, was incepted in those days only. 20th century witnessed a rapid transformation and enhancement in these watches. Innovation, though aimed at cashing in its huge market, continued and helped in developing watches that we see today.

Presently, we have lots of watch designs, model and even types. Most of the watches are highly advanced. But who knows, how the watches look like after next hundred years…Innovations are still on.

Step I: Before commencing anything, take stock of the make, model and type of the watch. If possible, please go through details of the watch’s working. It is strongly recommended not to take apart the watch, until you get sure about your knowledge about the watch battery. You should be confident over putting the dissembled parts together. If you want to keep the watch safe and free from any kind of scratches or damage, hold the watch during taking it apart.

Step II: With the help of a screwdriver, unscrew the screws of the watch. Keep the screws in a container in order to avoid their misplacing, which is pretty common during the process. Though screws are replaceable, try not to damage the screws. And same goes with other important parts of watches.

Step III: After carefully removing the gasket, locate the battery in the watch. The watch battery can be easily identified, as it is similar to a small, round-shaped, metal pill. Do not damage the battery during the course of the action. Also, do not press the metal or bend it. Replace a new battery at the place of the previous one. You may also test the old battery and mend it if required.

Step IV: Set aside the springs and screw that might have been left during the process. Without damaging these parts, place them in a separate container to keep them safe. Note: do not press hard, if any part does not come out. Better leave them as it is.

Step V: After mending the fault, reassemble the watch. Just make sure, everything is placed back on its position.

With the cell phones becoming a necessity of life, and with all the things they offer as add-ons such as email, SMS facility, camera including video recording, and access to a lot of other things as well including time, the watch has almost become an obsolete item to sport. However, there are still people who are a fan of the good old wrist watch and for them it is very important to maintain their watch properly and keep them in proper condition. However, at times, finding a good watch repair center can be a confusing task.

There are some old watches which are beyond repair that warrant disposing them off and buying a new one, but most of them can be repaired and brought back to work just as before. There are a lot of places which repair watches and the place you select should depend on the brand of the watch and its make. Repairing an expensive branded watch can be quite an affair, and must be handled solely by the manufacturer or a duly authorized agent of the manufacturer. The designer watches have their own certified quality products and repairing them might cost a little more. Giving them to any local repair shop to save money would be an irresponsible act since they can replace the quality parts with cheap ones. Repair from an authorized place would mean that they will give the highest regard to the quality of the watch and will replace a part (if necessary) with the original one.

There are also the inexpensive watches which can easily be repaired at a lower cost than a new watch but just for psychological reasons, you can take them to a reputed repair store as well. Just make sure that you do your homework well before giving them watches for repair. It is the best to rely on word of mouth information about repair stores since people with experience at a repair store will be able to give an unbiased opinion on whether you can rely on the particular repair store or not.
